Shanghai Refugee Records
Several of the Braunharts escaped Nazi Germany and emigrated to Shanghai in the late 1930s. Those who traveled to Shanghai were there for several years. The Braunharts who went to Shanghai included Theodor Braunhart, Dorka, Lothar and Lilly Braunhart, and Selma Braunhart's future husband George Gandel.
It is unknown as to why Theodor's wife Lucie did not go to Shanghai. We do know from letters that she wrote to Lilly after the war, that she stayed in Berlin to look after "the old man," referring to Alexander Braunhart. Alexander died in 1941, so at least he and Lucie were able to escape the Nazis for that long. Lucie remained in Berlin for the rest of her life, although she did travel to visit her relatives in America in 1956.
Julius was murdered in Theresienstadt in 1943. It is unknown as to why he did not travel to Shanghai with his wife Dorka and their two children Lothar and Lilly.
We do not know when Lilly married Alexander Hoorin, although she was named "Hoorin" in the Shanghai Refugees database. He was taken as a Prisoner of War and this was reported in 1943. A copy of some information about his detention is below.
