The article describes some of his adventures while in England and France in 1917 and 1918.
Let's just say that a case of the measles, contracted while being shipped over seas - saved his life.
Thank you Leo, for your service.

Leo Metzner, the father of my dad's first cousin, was in the U. S. Army in World War I. The following article was written as a tribute to him at age 88. It was written in 1983 and published in the Las Vegas Sun newspaper on Veteran's Day. The article describes some of his adventures while in England and France in 1917 and 1918. Let's just say that a case of the measles, contracted while being shipped over seas - saved his life. Thank you Leo, for your service.

What a cool and entertaining article. And yes, much better to be "wiped out" by the measles than in combat. A lucky fellow. He seems to have rolled with the punches, as they say, and to have had a satisfying life. Thanks for sharing this story.

Thanks Mariann for visiting. It is amazing to me how many interesting nuggets there are in the newspaper articles from our ancestors. I have had this article for about 7 years. I just happened to re-read it about a week ago, and the measles "story" stood out. It was a good "hook" for a title and the article tells the story - and I didn't have much to write - just present the article.
